Widely regarded as Japan's benchmark single malt, the Yamazaki 18 is the flagship aged expression from Suntory's Yamazaki distillery — the first and oldest malt whisky distillery in Japan, founded in 1923 at the foot of Mount Tennozan. Matured for a minimum of eighteen years, with roughly 80% of the whisky drawn from Spanish sherry casks and the remainder from American oak and prized Japanese Mizunara, it is a deeply layered, richly structured malt that has collected an extraordinary roll-call of international honours — including being named Supreme Champion Spirit at the 2025 International Spirits Challenge.

Tasting Notes
The nose is deep and opulent — raisin, apricot and café au lait lifted by the distinctive sandalwood-and-incense fragrance of Mizunara, over dried fruits and dark chocolate. The palate is rich and velvety, layering blackberry, strawberry jam and dark chocolate with honeyed sweetness, dried fruit and a gentle wisp of smoke. The finish is long, smooth and elegantly spiced, closing with dried fruit, tannic oak and a subtle peppery warmth.

Serves Best With
A whisky of this stature is best enjoyed neat in a tulip glass, with a few drops of water to unlock its full aromatic range and coax out the Mizunara character. It rewards slow, contemplative sipping and needs no accompaniment, though it pairs beautifully with dark chocolate, dried fruits and nuts, or a richly marbled cut of grilled beef for a special-occasion match.
