The Ghosted Reserve 21 Year Old is a remarkable and genuinely rare limited release from William Grant & Sons' prestigious Rare Cask Reserves series — a collection dedicated to preserving and celebrating exceptional whisky from distilleries that no longer exist. Crafted by Master Blender Brian Kinsman, this 21 year old blended malt draws its liquid from three permanently closed Scottish distilleries: Ladyburn, Inverleven, and Dumbarton — each a ghost of Scotland's whisky past, their stills silent forever and their remaining casks an irreplaceable and diminishing resource.

Ladyburn was built by William Grant & Sons within their Girvan distillery complex in Ayrshire in 1966 and operated for just nine years before closing in 1975. Inverleven was founded by Hiram Walker & Sons in Dumbarton in 1938 and produced single malt until its closure in 1991. Dumbarton, also located on the River Clyde, contributed its rare grain whisky character to round out and balance the blend. Together, these three ghost distilleries represent a vanished chapter of Scottish whisky history — one that can never be recreated. The fresh, fruity character of the Dumbarton grain whisky, the light floral notes of the Inverleven component, and the unique flavour profile of the Ladyburn malt combine under Kinsman's expert hand to create something genuinely unlike anything else available in the market. Bottled at 42.8% ABV with only a strictly limited number of bottles produced worldwide, every pour is a piece of living whisky history.

Tasting Notes
Pale golden amber in the glass. The nose is light, delicate, and immediately distinctive — fresh tropical fruit, dried peach, mango, and pineapple, layered with floral blossom, light oak, and a dusty earthiness reminiscent of ginger and cinnamon. The palate is soft, creamy, and gently juicy — honey, vanilla, malted barley, and tropical fruit, with a subtle waxy quality and hints of jasmine tea and baking spice that speak to the Lowland character of its component distilleries. The finish is medium in length, clean, and pleasantly drying, with lingering oak, dried fruit, and a gentle floral warmth.

Serves Best With
Best savoured neat in a tulip or Glencairn glass — a whisky of this rarity and character deserves to be experienced without distraction. A few drops of still water can open the nose and bring additional tropical fruit notes forward. Given the irreplaceable nature of its component distilleries, mixing is not recommended. Pairs beautifully with aged Comté or Gruyère, smoked salmon, or crème brûlée.
