Seagram's V.O. is one of the oldest and most recognisable names in Canadian whisky, with a heritage that stretches back to 1911 when Joseph E. Seagram first crafted this blend as his personal family reserve to celebrate his son's wedding. The initials V.O. are widely believed to stand for "Very Own" — a nod to its origins as a private family blend that was never originally intended for commercial release. What began as a personal gesture has since become one of Canada's most enduring and widely distributed whisky brands, now produced at the Valleyfield Distillery in Quebec under Diageo ownership.
Crafted in the traditional Canadian blending style using a selection of individually aged component whiskies, Seagram's V.O. is distinguished by its minimum six-year oak maturation — significantly longer than the legally required three years and a detail that adds genuine depth and structure to the finished blend. The Master Blender draws from a palette of over 2,000 individual flavouring and base whiskies to achieve the consistent, approachable character the brand has been known for across generations. Bottled at 40% ABV, it is smooth, mellow, and versatile — an honest, no-frills Canadian whisky built for everyday enjoyment and reliable mixing.
Tasting Notes
Light golden straw in the glass. The nose is juicy and fresh — spicy rye grain, dried apricot, vanilla, butterscotch, and a light oakiness, with subtle hints of corn and soft canned fruit in the background. The palate is medium-bodied and approachable, delivering creamy honey, caramel, lemon curd, gentle rye spice, and a touch of coffee and orange marmalade through the mid-palate. The finish is moderate in length, dry, and mildly spicy, fading cleanly with soft oak tannins and a lingering sweetness.
Serves Best With
At its best in a classic Canadian Rye and Ginger — pour 45ml over ice in a tall glass, top with chilled dry ginger ale, and garnish with a wedge of lemon. Also excellent in a simple Whisky and Cola, a Canadian Old Fashioned, or a Whisky Sour where its natural honey and rye spice character shines through. A reliable, versatile everyday pour enjoyed neat or over ice.
