Affectionately known in whisky circles as "Baby Saz," Sazerac 6 Year Old is a straight rye whiskey produced at the legendary Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. Sharing the same mash bill as its celebrated older sibling, the ultra-rare Sazerac 18 Year Old, it is crafted from approximately 51% rye, 39% corn, and 10% malted barley — a lower rye content than many of its peers, which gives it a notably sweeter and fruitier character compared to high-rye expressions on the market.
Aged for six years in new charred American white oak barrels and bottled at 45% ABV, Sazerac 6 sits at a sweet spot between approachability and genuine complexity. The higher corn content in the mash bill lends a softness and sweetness to the spirit that makes it exceptionally easy to enjoy neat, while retaining enough rye backbone and spice to perform brilliantly in cocktails. A multiple award winner and a perennial favourite among bartenders and rye enthusiasts alike, it represents outstanding value and is widely regarded as one of the finest entry points into the world of American rye whiskey.
Tasting Notes
Rich amber in the glass. The nose is inviting and fruity — orange zest, spiced apple, clove, and a touch of sweet corn, with vanilla and subtle tobacco in the background. The palate is smooth and medium-bodied, delivering honey, peppermint, cinnamon, citrus, and a gentle charred oak character. The finish is clean and moderately long, with lingering notes of pear, spice, and a pleasing warmth of rye bread and allspice.
Serves Best With
The natural choice for a classic Sazerac cocktail — rinse a chilled rocks glass with absinthe, stir 60ml of Baby Saz with a sugar cube and two dashes of Peychaud's bitters over ice, strain into the glass and garnish with a lemon peel twist. Also excellent in an Old Fashioned or Manhattan, or sipped neat and appreciated for what it is — one of the best value rye whiskies on the market.
