Old Monk is one of the most legendary and beloved dark rums to emerge from Asia, produced by Mohan Meakin Ltd at their Kasauli distillery in the foothills of the Himalayas, Himachal Pradesh, India. First introduced in 1954, Old Monk has achieved genuine cult status across India and internationally, becoming one of the best-selling dark rums in the world at its peak — a title earned not through heavy marketing, but almost entirely through word of mouth and unwavering loyalty from generations of drinkers.

The rum is crafted from high-quality sugarcane molasses and blended and aged in seasoned oak vats for a minimum of seven years, a maturation period that far exceeds many rums at a comparable price point. This extended ageing process allows the spirit to develop remarkable depth, complexity, and a characteristic smoothness that has made it a staple on bar shelves from Mumbai to Melbourne. Bottled at 42.8% ABV, it strikes a balance between potency and drinkability that has kept its formula essentially unchanged for decades — a testament to the confidence Mohan Meakin has in the product. The instantly recognisable squat, embossed bottle topped with the robed monk figurine remains one of the most iconic pieces of spirits packaging in the world.

Whether enjoyed neat by a seasoned rum drinker or mixed in a casual serve, Old Monk delivers an authenticity and character that modern, heavily marketed rums often struggle to match. It is the quintessential Indian rum and an essential bottle for any enthusiast of the category.

Tasting Notes
Old Monk pours a rich, deep amber-mahogany with warm copper highlights, reflecting its extended oak ageing. On the nose, it opens with an inviting bouquet of sweet vanilla, butterscotch, and dark caramel, layered with the distinctive warmth of molasses that speaks to its sugarcane origins. Beneath the sweetness, there are notes of dried fruit — raisins, dates, and prunes — along with subtle hints of toasted oak and warm baking spices including cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove.

On the palate, Old Monk is notably smooth and full-bodied for its age statement and price. The entry is rich and sweet, delivering waves of toffee, dark chocolate, and vanilla cream, before the mid-palate introduces deeper complexity — stewed fruit, leather, and a gentle oakiness that grounds the sweetness without overwhelming it. The baking spice character develops further through the mid-palate, adding warmth and dimension. The finish is long, satisfying, and gently warming, with lingering notes of dark cocoa, molasses, and a subtle peppery spice that encourages the next sip. Remarkably well-balanced for a rum at this price point.

Serves Best With / Brief Recipe

Old Monk & Cola (The Classic Serve)
The most iconic way to enjoy Old Monk. Fill a tall glass with ice, pour 45ml of Old Monk, top with 150ml of chilled cola, and finish with a squeeze of fresh lime and a lime wedge garnish. Stir gently. Simple, deeply satisfying, and the serve that built Old Monk's reputation across India.

Old Monk Hot Toddy
Perfect for cooler evenings. Add 45ml Old Monk to a heatproof mug with a generous teaspoon of honey, a cinnamon stick, two cloves, and a thick slice of lemon. Top with 150ml of freshly boiled water, stir well, and allow the spices to infuse for two minutes before drinking. The rum's natural spice character makes it exceptionally well-suited to this serve.

Old Monk Neat or On the Rocks
Given its complexity and smoothness, Old Monk is genuinely rewarding when sipped neat or over a single large ice cube in a rocks glass. Allow it a minute or two to open up and the full depth of vanilla, caramel, and oak reveals itself without distraction.

Food Pairings
Old Monk pairs beautifully with rich, spiced Indian cuisine — particularly slow-cooked curries, biryani, and tandoori dishes where its sweetness and spice complement bold flavours. It also works well alongside dark chocolate, aged cheeses, or a simple charcuterie board for a more casual occasion.
