Jameson Caskmates Stout Edition is a creative and highly successful collaboration between Jameson's Midleton Distillery in County Cork and local Irish craft brewers, born from a happy accident that has since become one of the most talked-about innovations in Irish whiskey. The story begins when Jameson shared some of their used whiskey barrels with Cork craft brewery Franciscan Well, who used them to age their stout. When the barrels were returned, the Jameson team noticed the residual stout had left behind remarkable flavour compounds — and so Caskmates was born.
Jameson's triple-distilled blend of pot still and grain Irish whiskey is first matured in the usual ex-bourbon American oak barrels before being finished in stout-seasoned barrels from the collaboration, allowing the whiskey to absorb the roasted, hoppy, and chocolatey character left behind by the beer. The result is a genuinely innovative expression that bridges the worlds of whiskey and craft beer in a natural and harmonious way, adding a layer of depth and intrigue to Jameson's famously smooth and approachable base without overwhelming it. Bottled at 40% ABV, it has attracted an enthusiastic following among both whiskey drinkers and craft beer fans alike.
Tasting Notes
Rich golden amber in the glass. The nose opens with the familiar Jameson sweetness — vanilla, light fruit, and gentle spice — now layered with enticing notes of roasted barley, dark chocolate, and a subtle hop character from the stout seasoning. The palate is smooth and medium-bodied, delivering toasted grain, cocoa, coffee, toffee, and a pleasant bitterness reminiscent of a well-crafted stout, balanced by the underlying pot still spice. The finish is warming and moderately long, with lingering notes of dark chocolate, roasted malt, and vanilla.
Serves Best With
Excellent neat or over ice, and a natural partner to a pint of stout for a classic Irish whiskey and beer pairing. Also exceptional in a Whiskey Sour with a dark chocolate rim, or simply with a splash of chilled ginger ale. Pairs beautifully with dark chocolate, roasted nuts, aged cheddar, or a hearty Irish beef stew.
