Known as "the fresh Japanese whisky," Hakushu is Suntory's herbaceous, gently smoky single malt born deep in the forested foothills of Mount Kaikomagatake in the Japanese Southern Alps. Surrounded by ancient woodland and fed by water filtered through granite over centuries, the distillery produces malt whisky of rare softness, purity and green vibrancy. The Distiller's Reserve is the no-age-statement entry point to the range, a core release since 2014 that marries young, lightly peated malts with older stock matured in American white oak — including whisky said to be up to eighteen years old — to capture the crisp, woodland character that defines the house style.

Tasting Notes
The nose is fresh and cooling, leading with peppermint, cut grass and pine, rounded out by cucumber, melon and ripe citrus over the barest wisp of smoke. The palate is clean and lively — green apple, pear, yuzu and grapefruit lifted by lemon thyme and gentle herbal notes, with a soft creaminess and delicate peat underneath. The finish is fresh and sustained, woody rather than fiery, closing with a subtle smoke and a crisp, mineral tang.
Serves Best With
This is the definitive highball whisky. For the signature Hakushu "forest" highball, pour 45ml over a tall glass packed with ice, top with chilled soda water (roughly 3-4 parts soda to 1 part whisky), stir once, and garnish with a sprig of fresh mint or a thin slice of green apple — crisp, aromatic and endlessly drinkable. It's equally rewarding neat or with a little ice to open the herbal notes. On the table, pair with sushi and sashimi, grilled white fish, tempura, oysters, or fresh salads with herbs, where its clean, green character shines.
