The Dictador Wixarika 1979 is one of the most extraordinary and collectible rums in the world — a vintage Colombian spirit distilled in 1979 and aged for a full 40 years in a combination of ex-Sherry, American oak, and ex-Port casks before being bottled at cask strength. Produced by Destilería Colombiana in Cartagena, Colombia — a distillery with roots stretching back to 1913 — it forms part of Dictador's celebrated Totem Wixarika series, a collection that pays deep homage to the Huichol people of Mexico, an indigenous group whose rich spiritual traditions, sacred art, and profound connection to the natural world serve as the creative foundation for this exceptional range.

What makes the Wixarika series as remarkable to look at as it is to drink is the extraordinary artistry of each individual bottle. Every bottle in the collection is hand-decorated by a Huichol artisan using thousands of tiny glass beads — a traditional craft form known as chaquira, in which intricate symbolic patterns are applied bead by bead over the course of an entire week of painstaking work. Tasting Notes
Deep, dark amber in the glass with rich mahogany hues reflecting four decades of cask maturation. The nose is full-bodied and immediately commanding — roasted coffee, dark chocolate, dried cherries, and raisins, with layers of aged oak, leather, and warm baking spice beneath. The palate is extraordinarily rich, complex, and intensely concentrated at cask strength — waves of dark chocolate, toffee, espresso, stewed fruit, molasses, and a pronounced woody depth that speaks to 40 years in a variety of premium casks. The finish is exceptionally long and lingering, with dark spice, dried fruit, bitter cocoa, and a warming oak character that fades slowly and gracefully.

Serves Best With
Best savoured neat in a quality tulip glass, with a small amount of still water to gently open the nose and temper the cask strength. This is a rum that demands patience and full attention — allow it several minutes to breathe and evolve in the glass before the first sip. Given its rarity and age, mixing is strongly not recommended. Pairs beautifully with aged dark chocolate or dried fig if desired, but is most rewarding enjoyed on its own as a collector's pour.
