Canadian Club 12 Year Old is a significant step up from the approachable Original expression, offering the same distinguished heritage of the Hiram Walker Distillery in Windsor, Ontario, but with an additional six years of oak maturation that delivers a noticeably richer, more complex, and more rewarding drinking experience. Where the Original is built for casual everyday drinking and mixing, the 12 Year Old is crafted for those who want to slow down and appreciate what extended barrel ageing can bring to a Canadian whisky.
Like all Canadian Club expressions, the 12 Year Old is produced using the brand's signature pre-ageing blending method — grain and flavouring whiskies are combined before entering the barrel rather than after, allowing the component spirits to integrate and harmonise over the full twelve years of maturation. The result is a whisky of exceptional smoothness and cohesion, where the individual elements are inseparable from one another and the oak influence has had ample time to develop genuine depth and character. Bottled at 40% ABV, it represents outstanding value in the aged Canadian whisky category and is a deserving upgrade for Canadian Club loyalists and whisky enthusiasts alike.
Tasting Notes
Warm amber gold in the glass. The nose is more expressive and layered than the Original — rich vanilla, toasted oak, dried fruit, caramel, and a gentle rye spice, with subtle hints of dark honey and cinnamon developing with time. The palate is smooth, medium to full-bodied, and well-rounded — delivering toffee, dried apricot, oak, warm baking spice, and a pleasing nuttiness through the mid-palate. The finish is longer and more satisfying than the Original, with lingering notes of vanilla, toasted wood, and gentle rye warmth.
Serves Best With
Best enjoyed neat or over a single large ice cube to fully appreciate the complexity earned through twelve years of maturation. Also excellent in a premium Whisky and Dry or a classic Old Fashioned — stir 60ml with a sugar cube and two dashes of Angostura bitters over ice, strain into a rocks glass, and garnish with an orange twist. Pairs well with aged cheddar, charcuterie, or dark chocolate.
