First released in 1999 and produced in tiny annual quantities, it is built predominantly around exceptional Spanish Oloroso sherry casks, complemented by American oak and prized Japanese Mizunara, then matured for a minimum of twenty-five years. Tasting Notes
The nose is deep and opulent, opening with Mizunara's smoky incense and sandalwood over a complex bouquet of mature kaki persimmon and ume plum, joined by dried cherry, raisin, espresso and honey from the profound Oloroso sherry. The palate is rich and intensely layered — sandalwood and gentle smoke giving way to persimmon sweetness, tart ume plum and warming shoga ginger spice, with marmalade, coffee, cocoa and almond beneath. The finish is profound and exceptionally long, carrying lingering Mizunara smokiness, sweet oak and a fine thread of acidity.
Serves Best With
A whisky of this age, rarity and value should be enjoyed only neat, in a tulip glass that captures its extraordinary depth and aromatic complexity. Give it ample time to breathe and add at most a single drop of water.
