A landmark release and one of the rarest expressions Suntory has ever produced, the Yamazaki 25 Years Old Mizunara is the oldest single malt in the distillery's history to be matured 100% in Japanese Mizunara oak. Mizunara casks account for less than 1% of Suntory's entire inventory, and this prized native oak — close-grained, permeable and notoriously difficult to coax into casks — only begins to reveal its secrets after more than fifteen years of patient maturation. To spend a full twenty-five years exclusively in this temperamental wood is a feat of craftsmanship few houses in the world could attempt, making this a once-in-a-lifetime whisky in the truest sense.
Presented in a handcrafted wooden box assembled using a traditional Japanese nail-free interlocking method that echoes the construction of the casks themselves, this is as much an objet d'art as a spirit. Amber with reddish hues, profoundly complex and exceptionally limited, it sits at the very pinnacle of the Yamazaki range — a collector's grail and the ultimate expression of the Mizunara artistry that defines the soul of Japanese whisky.
Tasting Notes
The nose is rich and beguiling — a sweetness like apricot compote folded into cacao and creamy latte smoothness, lifted by the fragrant spice of nutmeg and cardamom. The palate is bittersweet and spiced, with candied orange notes offset by a soft, creamy mouthfeel. The finish carries the complex, layered woodiness of Mizunara at its peak — sandalwood and incense threaded with bittersweet hints of oriental herbal medicine, vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon that linger remarkably long.
Serves Best With
A whisky of this age, rarity and value is to be savoured neat and entirely on its own, in a tulip glass that concentrates its extraordinary Mizunara aromatics. Give it generous time to open and add nothing more than perhaps a single drop of water.
