From the Wild Turkey Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky comes Russell's Reserve 6 Year Old Rye — the only standard age-stated rye in Wild Turkey's range, hand-selected by master distillers Jimmy and Eddie Russell, a father-and-son team with over a century of combined experience. Built on Wild Turkey's signature "barely legal" rye mash bill (around 51% rye, 37% corn, 12% malted barley) and aged a full six years in deeply charred No. 4 "alligator" American oak barrels drawn from the centre cut of the rickhouse, it's bottled at an easy-drinking 90 proof (45% ABV).
The high-corn mash bill makes this one of the most approachable and bourbon-friendly ryes you'll find — sweeter and rounder than most, yet still carrying that classic rye spice and structure. That balance makes it a brilliant entry point for bourbon drinkers curious about rye, while remaining a reliable, versatile pour for seasoned rye fans. Age-stated ryes are increasingly hard to come by, which only adds to its appeal.
Tasting Notes
The nose is warm and inviting — vanilla, caramel and toasted oak lifted by baking spice, cinnamon and mint, with bright citrus and lemon zest over a gentle rye-bread note. The palate is smooth and sweet-forward, layering honey, caramel and creamy vanilla against well-tempered rye spice, allspice, black pepper and a touch of almond and citrus. The finish is medium and warming, closing with lingering rye spice, sweet oak and a hint of dried fruit.
Serves Best With
Approachable enough to enjoy neat or over a large ice cube, with a splash of water drawing out its sweeter side. It truly shines in cocktails — the Russells' own recommended serve is a classic Manhattan: stir 60ml Russell's Reserve Rye with 30ml sweet vermouth and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters over ice, strain into a chilled glass and garnish with a cherry. It also makes an excellent Old Fashioned or Boulevardier. On the food side, pair with grilled meats, charcuterie, aged cheese or dark chocolate.
