The crowning expression of the Hakushu range and one of the most decorated Japanese whiskies ever made, the Hakushu 25 is an ultra-rare single malt from Suntory's forested mountain distillery in the Southern Japanese Alps. Vatted from malts aged a minimum of twenty-five years — including a heavily peated component and whisky matured in American oak, Spanish sherry casks and prized Japanese Mizunara — it represents the distillery at its most robust, profound and complete. Each bottle is sealed with a five-cord Mizuhiki, the traditional symbol of Japanese hospitality, befitting a whisky of this stature.

Tasting Notes
The nose is deep, dark amber and smouldering — toffee apples, plum, caramel and the scent of a cigar humidor over rancio, Armagnac, ginger, nutmeg and aged cedar. The palate is rich and intricately sherried, layering wood smoke, linseed, rhubarb and custard sweets, raspberry and walnut with crème brûlée, sage and baked pineapple, as a cooling sprig of spearmint slowly develops. The finish is endlessly long, warm and herbal, closing with bittersweet oak, gentle smoke and a whisper of Japanese cypress (hinoki).
Serves Best With
A whisky of this rarity and complexity should only ever be enjoyed neat, in a tulip-shaped glass that concentrates its layered aromatics. Allow it ample time to open in the glass and add nothing more than perhaps a single drop of water to coax out its floral and herbal depths. No food pairing is necessary — this is a contemplative, occasion-defining dram best appreciated slowly and entirely on its own merits.
